The title of this post provides a hint of how the special day's name came to be: October 31st is the evening before the day that the Catholic Church remembers and venerates all the saints. Saints are those who have died and who the Church has said have gone to Heaven. These people have lived such holy lives, they are considered to be in Heaven with God, praying for us here below!
Saints are what I like to call "our holy heroes"! They are people we can look up to for the way they lived their lives. So "Halloween" translates to the "evening of the holy ones" - Hallo = Holy and Ween = evening! Should we celebrate our holy heroes? Absolutely! Here's an great infographic from Kid's for Christ for more information.
