Dear School Families,
So much has happened in these first few months of the school year, that I hardly know how to begin this "OLLRCS Happenings" message! This message contains a lot of important information; PLEASE read the entire message. I'll start by jumping in with a reminder of what is happening on Friday, November 11th:
We are honored to have veterans joining us at 11 am for a program to honor their service followed by a luncheon. A soup and sandwich lunch was already scheduled and volunteers organizing this event decided to invite veterans and their guests to join us for lunch. (Students who have not ordered the hot lunch tomorrow should just pack a lunch from home as planned.) Since tomorrow is the second Friday of the month, students may wear jeans and a patriotic shirt (red/white/blue, American flag, etc.). If they don’t have an appropriate shirt, they may wear a uniform shirt - conveniently red, white or blue!
Our 6th Annual Gala was a great success! This is a result of the hard work and many hours of devoted parents and volunteers. Final numbers are still being “crunched” - much like the recent election, but the results are looking very promising! We surpassed our raffle ticket goals - thanks to your efforts selling tickets, and many guests left with great gifts donated by generous supporters. I’ve heard many compliments from first time attendees who were very impressed with such a beautiful event. 2016 Gala Chairman Bill Wahl is planning a post-gala meeting for next week, watch the website and Google calendar for notification of day & time. If you worked the gala to earn fundraising credit, please submit your fundraising time sheet to your committee chair for his/her signature.
Primary grades report cards will be sent home Friday (11/11), and Middle School students’ cards will be sent home on Monday (11/14) afternoon. Parent Teacher Conferences are scheduled for the afternoons and evenings of November 16 & 17th. Since the teachers will be unavailable to offer Star Track Academy, Mrs. Flynn and I will be hosting an alternative afternoon activity on these days for students whose families are coming from work and while conferences are being held. Teachers are scheduling their own conferences, so watch for a message from your child’s teacher regarding your child’s conference time.
You may have heard about “The BOOT” - a safety feature being installed in local schools. This joint effort between the Roscommon County Community Foundation, Roscommon County Sherriff’s Department and public and private schools will greatly increase the safety of Roscommon County school children in the event of a violent intruder. I’m happy to announce that, thanks to recently received donations, OLLRCS has been added to the list of area schools to have the device installed in 24 school doors in the next two weeks. The donations along with the generosity of Rob Couturier, inventor of “The BOOT”, we can make an initial payment for our school. The remaining balance will be paid over the next several months with fundraising monies. A parent meeting will be held in the next several weeks to demonstrate this safety feature and discuss school safety.
Last, but certainly NOT least, I am requesting that you prayerfully consider volunteering to represent our school in a leadership position. Since becoming principal I have observed the great efforts of many of our families and volunteers to spearhead efforts for our school: fundraising efforts (the Stargazer Gala, Cabin Fever Rummage Sale, etc.), special events (Veterans Day, Advent Play, etc.), welcoming and mentoring new families, improving facilities (playground), and the list goes on! You have heard me say that parents are the primary educators of their children, and that we are your partners in providing a safe, nurturing, faith-filled environment to help your child be the best he or she can be for the Glory of God. We must do this important work together. Parenting is a vocation, a high calling from God, it is not a passive endeavor that we can hand-off to an institution. I know that you want to do all you can to raise your child to be first a follower of Jesus, and second, the best “self” he or she can be, academically, socially, physically and spiritually. I know this, because your child is enrolled at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Catholic School. You sacrifice time and money to provide this excellent environment to your child. Now I am asking you to take one more step in fulfilling your vocation. Pray about your ability to serve on one of two organizational bodies: first, a “Home+School Committee” and second, a “School Advisory Council”. I hope the titles immediately communicate a difference between the two bodies. Both will meet every 4-6 weeks, for no longer than 90 minutes at a day and time agreeable to all members.
First, a Home+School Committee will actively function to strengthen the connection between our students’ families and our school. Members of this active parent-teacher organization will be parents/guardians of students, teachers and myself. We will work together to:
- brainstorm ideas and organize various efforts for school improvement (parent support, alumni outreach, extra-curricular programs and groups, fundraising efforts, etc.),
- coordinate activities like school events, and
- enhance communication between families, our school and our wider community.
Second, a School Advisory Council, will act as an advice-giving board for Fr. Rolando and me. This council will be comprised of one or more of the following members: OLLRCS graduates, parishioners from one or more of our supporting parishes, community members (business owners, realtors, etc.), current and past school parents/guardians, and teachers.
Members of the School Advisory Council will:
- help determine short- and long-term goals for our school,
- provide perspective and ideas about school policy, and
- contribute to accreditation and marketing efforts.
I would appreciate your nominations for membership to both committees. Nominations will be kept anonymous. If you are nominated, and believe you cannot accept this responsibility right now, that too, will be held confidential. Nominations may be submitted via email at email@example.com or written and sent into the office with your child. I cannot stress the importance of these committees in the future of OLLRCS. Please pray, discern, and contact me with any questions and nominations. I need your help! Thank you for reading this message.
God bless you,
