God’s grace can heal a soul wounded by sin. The first step in reconciliation is being truly sorry for our sins. The next step is to confess them to a priest, who will offer an appropriate penance. The third step is absolution (forgiveness).

Jesus entrusted the ministry of reconciliation to the Church. The Sacrament of Penance is God’s gift to us so that any sin committed after Baptism can be forgiven. In confession, we have the opportunity to repent and recover the grace of friendship with God. It is a holy moment in which we place ourselves in his presence and honestly acknowledge our sins, especially mortal sins. With absolution, we are reconciled to God and the Church. Children preparing for Confirmation/First Holy Communion are prepared to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This preparation occurs in the second grade (age of reason) or older
The Sacrament of Reconciliation may be received many times throughout a person’s life. According to the Precepts of the Catholic Church, Catholics must confess serious sins at least once a year. In addition, Catholics must confess all known mortal (deadly) sins.
